One of my best friends described this perfectly…
I know this video has been social-media-ed to death, but I just watched it for the first time this morning. Many of my uber Christian friends had been sharing it, and I was hesitant to watch because the GOP race is about all the religious propaganda by gag reflex can take. When I finally watched it though, I really wanted to dislike it. However, I couldn’t. Even as an atheist, I can really respect the message. I have trouble believing in the idea of God, but a large part of my struggles is also putting faith in the institution of churches. They have been historically corrupt, and I have certainly experience less-than-Christian behaviors in my interactions with churches and church officials. Regardless of these sentiments though, I acknowledge Jesus as a humanitarian. I am skeptical of his paternity and, though I agree he died a terrible death, I’m not sure what it has to do with my flaws in actuality. Nevertheless, he was an extremely compassionate and accepting person, full of love for mankind. That is ultimately what I strive for, and why I identify myself as a humanist more than an atheist (though they are interrelated for me).
I guess my point is, I appreciate the true spirituality in this video in exchange for the religious advertisement we often see. I feel like this truly connects with the nature of what is supposed to be Christianity (and humanism, for that matter), rather than getting caught up in the politics and mudslinging that is often so central these days.
